Safety and Rescue on Mount Kilimanjaro

Climb Confidently with Climb2Kili Adventures

At Climb2Kili Adventures, your safety is our highest priority. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a thrilling and rewarding experience, but it also involves real risks — especially due to high altitude, weather conditions, and physical strain.

We follow strict safety protocols and work with an experienced team of certified guides and medical responders to ensure that your climb is not only successful but safe every step of the way.

1. Altitude Sickness Monitoring

The biggest risk on Kilimanjaro is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), which can progress to more serious conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) if not managed properly.

Our safety procedures include:

Daily health checks: Oxygen saturation levels, heart rate, and AMS symptom screening (using the Lake Louise Score)

“Pole pole” pace: Slow and steady hiking to encourage gradual acclimatization

Rest and acclimatization days in itineraries for better altitude adaptation

Education before the climb: We teach you to recognize symptoms early

2. Qualified Mountain Guides

All of our Kilimanjaro guides are:

  • Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or First Aid certified
  • Trained in altitude sickness management, emergency evacuation, and high-altitude protocol
  • Experienced in both medical decision-making and route safety
  • We maintain a low climber-to-guide ratio (usually 2–3 climbers per guide) for personal care and close observation.

3. Emergency Equipment Provided

  • Each Climb2Kili Adventures climb includes the following gear:
  • Portable Oxygen Cylinder – used in emergencies to stabilize climbers suffering from severe AMS
  • Pulse Oximeters – used to check blood oxygen levels daily
  • First Aid Kit – carried by the lead guide with medications and supplies
  • Stretcher (Upon request or provided by rescue teams) – for quick descent in case of injury

4. Evacuation and Rescue Procedure

In case of serious illness or injury, evacuation is immediate and follows these steps:

Assisted Descent: The first response to altitude sickness is always to descend. Our porters and assistant guides are trained to safely escort you down the mountain, often using a stretcher or support system.

Rescue Coordination: In life-threatening situations, we coordinate with Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) rescue services for helicopter evacuation from certain zones (ex: Horombo Hut or Shira Plateau).

Insurance Activation: We help clients activate their travel insurance policy (required) which must cover high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.

5. Safety Tips for Climbers

  • Train in advance: Focus on cardio and endurance
  • Choose longer itineraries (7+ days) for better acclimatization
  • Stay hydrated and eat regularly
  • Listen to your guide – they are your lifeline
  • Be honest about your symptoms – early intervention saves lives
  • Get the right insurance – make sure it covers trekking over 4,000m and includes helicopter evacuation
