Kilimanjaro Packing List

Packing the right gear is essential for a safe and successful Kilimanjaro trek. Weather on the mountain can shift from hot and sunny to freezing and snowy — all in one day. Here’s a complete list of recommended items to bring:

Clothing – Layered for All Conditions

Base Layers (for warmth & moisture control):

  • 2–3 moisture-wicking t-shirts (synthetic or merino wool)
  • 2 thermal base layer tops (long-sleeve)
  • 2 thermal base layer bottoms

Mid Layers (for insulation):

  • 1 fleece jacket or soft-shell
  • 1 lightweight insulated down or synthetic jacket
  • 1 pair of fleece or soft-shell pants

Outer Layers (for wind, rain, and snow):

  • Waterproof jacket (with hood – breathable Gore-Tex or similar)
  • Waterproof pants (full-zip preferred)
  • Windbreaker (optional but useful)

Trekking Clothes:

  • 2–3 pairs of hiking pants
  • 1 pair of shorts (for lower altitudes)
  • 3–4 pairs of moisture-wicking underwear
  • 3–4 pairs of hiking socks (plus warm thermal socks for summit night)

Head & Hands:

  • Warm hat (covering ears)
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Buff or neck gaiter (multi-use)
  • Headlamp (with extra batteries)
  • Warm gloves (inner liner + insulated outer gloves)

Footwear

  • Hiking boots (well broken-in, waterproof, with ankle support)
  • Camp shoes or sandals (for use at camp)
  • Gaiters (optional, for summit day and wet conditions)

Gear & Equipment

  • Daypack (20–30L, for daily use)
  • Large duffel bag (70–90L – carried by porters)
  • Rain cover (for daypack and duffel bag)
  • Sleeping bag (rated to -10°C / 14°F or colder – available to rent)
  • Sleeping bag liner (for added warmth)
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended, adjustable)
  • Water bottles and/or hydration bladder (minimum 3L total)
  • Sunglasses (UV protection)
  • Waterproof dry bags or stuff sacks (to organize gear)

Personal Items & Toiletries

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+), lip balm with SPF
  • Wet wipes / biodegradable soap
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Toilet paper (carry in a zip-lock bag)
  • Small personal first aid kit (plasters, painkillers, etc.)
  • Blister care (e.g., Compeed or moleskin)
  • Hand sanitizer

Documents & Essentials

  • Passport (with Tanzania visa)
  • Travel insurance (must include high-altitude trekking)
  • Vaccination certificate (yellow fever if required)
  • Cash (for tips, extra snacks, souvenirs – USD preferred)
  • Copies of important documents (kept separately)

Optional but Useful

  • Energy snacks (protein bars, trail mix, sweets)
  • Camera or smartphone (for photos)
  • Journal or notebook
  • Power bank / solar charger
  • Earplugs (for noisy nights in huts or tents)
  • Lightweight book or e-reader
