Tanzania’s Hidden Climbing Gem

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) and the fifth-highest in Africa. Located within the stunning Arusha National Park, just 70 km west of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is often overshadowed by its taller neighbor — but for many adventurers, it’s a more wild, peaceful, and rewarding trek.

Meru is a dormant stratovolcano, with its last minor eruption recorded in 1910. Its dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater, formed by a historic eruption, offers spectacular views and one of the most scenic trekking routes in East Africa. The climb starts in lush rainforest inhabited by giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, warthogs, and countless bird species, making it one of the few mountain treks in the world where you hike alongside wildlife.

The route to the summit — Socialist Peak — passes through multiple ecological zones: from forest and heathland to alpine desert. Climbers are always accompanied by an armed park ranger, due to the presence of wild animals in the lower zones. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru’s trekking route is less crowded and more budget-friendly, making it a favorite for seasoned trekkers and first-time climbers alike.

Whether you’re climbing Mount Meru as an acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro, or as a standalone adventure, it offers an unforgettable experience filled with rich nature, dramatic landscapes, and a sense of true wilderness.
