6-Day Umbwe Route Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

  • Trek Time: 5–7 hours
  • Begin the climb through dense rainforest on a steep trail leading to Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (3,950m)

  • Trek Time: 4–6 hours
  • Enter heath and moorland zones, traversing a ridge with epic views before descending to Barranco Camp.

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035m)

  • Trek Time: 4–5 hours
  • Climb the iconic Barranco Wall and hike through alpine desert to reach Karanga Camp.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,640m)

  • Trek Time: 3–4 hours
  • Short but steep ascent to Barafu Camp. Early dinner and rest before summit push.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

  • Trek Time: 12–15 hours
  • Start summit attempt at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, then descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m)

  • Trek Time: 3–4 hours
  • Final descent through rainforest. Transfer back to Moshi for celebration and rest.

7-Day Umbwe Route Itinerary (Recommended for Better Acclimatization)

  • Follows the same route with an extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp before proceeding to Barafu Camp.
